The Joint Programme on PROWATER, together with the Regional Water and Sanitation Hub V—Coalition for Bicol Development, facilitated the creation and institutionalization of the integrated safe water, sanitation and hygiene (iWaSH) Council in the municipality of Capalonga, Camarines Norte on February 28, 2017.
On the same day, Mayor Senandro M. Jalgalado of Capalonga, Camarines Norte committed to pass an Ordinance to create the Municipal iWaSH Council as well an Executive Order to create the iWaSH Team to fully implement proposed programs and projects on iWaSH.
“Our municipality recognizes the need for an integrated approach to safe water, sanitation and hygiene given our problems on WASH. And we are thankful for this programme, that even though our municipality cannot be easily reached, you (SDGF PMO and RHub) still continue to extend your assistance to us,” according to the mayor in his opening remarks.
Part of the programme’s assistance to beneficiary LGUs is to establish harmonized local governance structures and mechanisms for integrated safe water, sanitation and hygiene. The iWaSH Council will serve as the local oversight and policy making body to formulate and pass local policies to support the promotion, advocacy, implementation and sustainability of iWaSH plans, projects, programs in the municipality and will identify areas for development and recommendations to enhance access to and provision of safe water, sanitation and hygiene services to target communities, especially among women and girls.
